Nativity of St. John the Baptist (Solemnity, not a Holy Day of Obligation)

Mass in the church at 5:30pm with Confessions at 5pm.

This feast, dating from the 4th Century AD in both the East and West, came to be celebrated, in accord with Luke 1:36, six months before the Lord’s birth (December 25); quoting John 3:30, St. Augustine found this date (near the summer solstice) appropriate for, after the birth of John, daylight begins to grow shorter, whereas after Jesus’ birth, it begins to increase.
